Daily Life & Social Structure
The daily life in Ancient Rome was different depending on the class you lived in. Rome was a great city consisting of many beautiful temples and buildings, but most Romans lived in tiny overcrowded apartments wedged into tight streets.
The majority of the Roman population was not rich. The rich that did live in Rome lived in huge palaces, and they had many slaves that worked for them. Some rich people had houses in the country to escape from the bustling city. They did this to relax and participate in some new outdoor activities. But this was only a small percentage of the population in Rome. The main percentage of Romans were quite poor. They lived in small apartments filled with disease. The streets where they lived was filled with terrible crimes. The conditions are so bad that if your child lives past the age of 10 that's worth celebrating because it doesn’t occur often.
The transition to adulthood for kids was different depending on your gender. Boys became adults in between the ages of 14 and 18. He would offer his bulla and childhood toys to the gods. Girls, on the other hand, had no ceremony. They became adults when they got married. Usually between the ages of 12 and 18.
Schooling was also different based on gender. Boys were tutored by their father until the age of 6 or 7 then went off to school. Boys typically became soldiers, doctors, politicians, and lawyers. At age 16 boys end their schooling and now can manage their own land. Girls, on the other hand, were a little bit different. Like young boys, they too would be taught by their father until they were 6 or 7, then go to school. But girls only went to school until 12 or 13 and then, they would end their schooling. Girls usually became dentists, real estate agents, tutors, or midwives.
People who lived in Ancient Rome ate all different kinds of foods. For breakfast they would typically eat a piece of bread and a bowl of beans and porridge. For lunch, Romans would commonly eat small bits of cheese and bread, olives, or maybe even some celery.
Dinner was different for the different social classes. The poor regularly ate chunks of fish and/ or asparagus, and figs for dessert. The rich often had a huge main meal and special appetizers. Some favorite foods of all the people living in Ancient Rome were mice cooked in honey, roasted parrots stuffed with dates, salted jellyfish, and snails dipped in milk.
